I stood at the finish line and watched her struggle.
Her tiny little frame. Her pink bathing suit. Her sweet lanky arms doing their back-stroking best.
In the middle of her lane she flipped to her belly. She still had a long way to go.
Her heat-mates, having finished, stood, teeth chattering at the shallow end of the pool. They were all waiting on her.
In the brevity of a second (but might've felt like an hour) her big brown eyes - water clumping her lashes - carried discouragement and fatigue.
She was in the ocean; the shore too far away.
So we cheered, and we clapped, and we yelled, "You're almost there!"
And she flipped to her back and pressed on.
The smile on her face when she knew she had finished caused a sting in my eyes that remains there today.
So fatigued, as she was, she needed a boost from the water, but she walked as tall as a smallish swimmer could be...
Encouragement.
We will drowned with out it.
I stayed by the pool, my stop-watch in hand. My pencil, my score cards, my bottle of water. I recorded the times and cheered on for others, but I was traveling to places on my own stormy sea.
I was remembering days when someone encouraged my efforts, focused my faith, helped me to 'swim-on' when feeling fatigued. Those times were fresh air to my lungs, and cool water when thirsty. It framed the pictures of life I was too ambivalent to see.
I was remembering moments when (apart from my doing) I was privileged to watch encouragement help people I love... to get better, to have confidence, to learn to trust again.
Encouragement lends room for the hard-heart to soften, the broken-heart to find comfort, the hindered-heart to find hope. And last night, as a pool full of parents hollered and cheered, it helped a little brown-eyed girl make it to the finish line.
It helped this brown-eyed girl to remember.

Brown Eyed Girl
~~~~~~~
God of all healing counsel!
He comes alongside us when we go through hard times,
and before you know it,
he brings us alongside someone else
who is going through hard times
so that we can be there for that person just as God was there for us.
2 Cor. 1:4
The Divine Appointment I Nearly Missed
Last weekend I had a moment I couldn't have planned or prepared for.
I was at a large aquatic center and the place was buzzing with excited swimmers getting ready to compete in our Championship meet.
According to the Swim League website there were over 1000 swimmers registered to compete. Just swimmers. Add a parent (or two) and you could say the place was crowded.
The competition had been in full swing for a couple of hours when The Girl told me she needed to use the restroom. I asked her to find a friend and go, after-all I was socializing with a couple of moms. But she was insistent that I take her.
I (begrudgingly) did.
While I was there I decided I should go ahead and use the facility as well, and when I came out of the stall to wash my hands I noticed a gal about my age doing her best to stop crying.
Our eyes met.
I gently asked if she was OK.
She told me she was "just trying to get it together" and then added "its just that single-parenting is sometimes really hard."
Her tone wasn't whiny or full of pity, she was just stating a fact: Sometimes life is hard.
Before I knew what I was doing I walked over and threw my arms around her, which she readily accepted.
In that bustling bathroom I whispered short encouragements to her: Hang in there. You can do this.
We held each other tight and after a short time I let her go and walked out of the room into the masses of people.
I've been thinking and praying for her all week. Simply cannot get her, and those like her, off my mind.
I wish I had had the courage (or thought) to pray over her, right there in that bathroom...to encourage her in a more tangible way.
But I've been praying ever since...
Praying for those in my life who - be it by choice or circumstance - walk this arduous and beautiful road of parenthood all by themselves.
I'm praying that I would not underestimate being ready to encourage others with a Love that never fails, and that I would be ready in season and out. I pray that I wouldn't allow selfish desires to get in the way of moments and opportunities to comfort those in trouble with the comfort I've received.
Sometimes life is hard.
May I never be too busy, never be too blinded by the sights and sounds of life, or by things that clamor for my attention, to be an encouragement to those around me...Lord, may it be so.
Every One Needs a Little
Last week The Girl went rock climbing with her Girl Scout Troop.
Having never done any rock climbing myself, I didn't know what to expect, or how the equipment worked.
We learned about the figure eight knot, and how to get harnessed in the gear. We learned what it meant to be a belayer.
The Girl was very nervous.
I asked if it was because her arms and legs got tired.
She said it wasn't that...she said when she looked down, she became afraid.
There was another mom who was belaying (that's the person who has control of the rope so the climber doesn't plummet to the ground). She is a very quiet kind of gal. She doesn't say much...
But, when she had The Girl climbing that wall she would speak in quiet tones meant for only The Girl to hear, "That's it, G, keep your weight in your feet... Yes...That's it....You are doing a great job....There is a foothold just to your left...Can you reach it?....Yes, you have it!....Keep going...Your doing great....Look up, there's a perfect place for you right hand...You got it....Good job."
Whispers meant only for The Girl...
It reminded me to be aware of those around me who may be climbing the walls of life, who hang, mid-wall, without a belayer, shaking legs and bloodied hands.
Lord, help me to remember that quiet whispers of encouragement can be a life-line to someone else...give me wisdom to use them gently and lavishly.
Encouragement. Every one needs a little.
Your love has given me great joy and encouragement,
because you, have refreshed the hearts of the saints.
