I love it when words that I've been singing for years suddenly come alive.
It happened to me this morning, while it was still dark, and the day was new.
"O come, O come Emmanuel, and ransom captives...that mourn in lonely exile here..."
What I heard afresh is this: Emmanuel, God with us, He ransoms captives.
He is with the lonely, the bitter, the angry.
He's with the broken, the sick.
He's with those who have received bad news, or those without family.
He helps those who are confused.
He comforts those who are frightened.
He loves those who feel unlovable.
He feeds the hungry- quenches the thirst of those with nothing to drink.
He is Living Water in a dry and weary land...
What holds you captive?
Come.
He's ransomed this captive.
"Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee... "
