Put Down the Duckie

I've realized something about myself.

I may be addicted to hobbies.

Case in point: Since I already blog, sew, embroider, run, bake, play guitar, fold paper, bead, scrapbook and craft, I thought I might add knitting.

On the first of December I had a new friend over for a late night sewing session over the embroidery machine and a glass of wine.

She needed to monogram a few baby blankets on Clinton the Embroidery Machine and I wanted her to teach me the basics of knitting. After all, she is the Knitting Evangelist.

Anyway, she taught me the knit and the purl stitch on needles she brought from home and I was immediately hooked.

So much so that the next day, unable to get to the craft store, I took out mechanical pencils, with the lead push in, and began to practice what she taught me.

I wish I had taken a picture. Because while I was practicing my knit/purl skillz, pencils aren't really meant to be needles.

Soon I was able to get my hands on some needles of my own. After many attmepts I finally got my kitting groove, and now I am unstoppable.

Did you know that you can find all sorts of videos on YouTube that will show you EXACTLY how to knit? It's amazing.

Anyway, last night I stayed up way too late learning a new way to cast on, called a long-tail cast on, and then I learned how to make what will eventually be a flower.

I already have my heart set on making these. In time, but hopefully in time for spring. I've always had a thing for chickens.

However, today I have to put down the needles--bunny trail: now I am singing Put Down the Ducky if You Want to Play the Saxaphone...a song I sing often to my kids (and myself) when I need to walk away from something in order to accomplish something else.

My goals for today are to do my laundry, make sure the kids fold their laundry, and the help The Girl clean out her room--from floor to closet and all places in between.

...Put down the needles! Put down the needles! Put down the needles, if you want to have a tidy hooooommmmmeeee!!!!...Put down the needles, Put! Down! The! Needles!..... put down the needles if you want to have a tidy home........(music fades out...)

Happy Wednesday!

So many projects, so little time... :)

Hi,
My name is Gretchen, and I have too many hobbies.

Hi, Gretchen.

BTW, I'm trying to avoid this white hot jealousy over how GOOD you are at knitting ALREADY! hmph. But I hear that bitterness and jealousy are sin, so I'm quickly repenting, and am awaiting your first book. THat flower is darling!

From a fellow crafty ADD person, I hear you. Except I can't knit. I even had the "knitting whisperer" try and help me. Didn't work.

I got two new craft toys for Christmas. My head is spinning at all of the possibilities. :)

I'm trying to wipe the green with envy from my face. Because green isn't a good color for me.

I can't make heads nor tails of knitting needles. And wouldn't have known that you weren't supposed to use mechanical pencils until you told me.

Impressy, CoffeeGal. Impressy.

Grasshopper, welcome to the dark side. I'll trade you hobbies. I always try to pick up a new skill every year, so I think I'm going to learn to sew.

Right after I make that chicken.

Knitting is like crack for crafty women. I have 32 skeins of yard waiting for their turn.

And we love "Put Down The Ducky". I'll sing it in that growly, Louie Armstrong muppet voice, too.

Sort of like when I sing...."close the laptop, just close the laptop..".

I think you get way more done with those needles than I do with my laptop ;)Fab scarf....makes me want to learn to knit.

Oh, I'm JEALOUS!! I've wanted to learn to kit for SO long! So, now you'll have to read The Friday Night Knitting Club :)
We did the girls' closets on Monday. Pulled everything out, installed closet organizers, redid all the drawers, etc. Little guy's was done yesterday. All told, we gave away 28 garbage bags full to Goodwill! My resolution this year is to keep getting rid of stuff!

You are too funny! And I'm SOOOOO the same way. Let's see ... I cross-stitch, paint, write, sew, stamp, scrap, and most things in between. What did I buy two weeks before Christmas? A ton of beads to make necklaces and a knitting machine for my five-year-old. I think I've used it more than she has, but ... oooh, I'm getting urges!

Love that song! It really should be a theme song for me, too! I get soooooo distracted with things I love to do and put off the things I don't love to do so much. Like laundry.

Thanks Kellie!
Happy New Year!

I'm jealous. I tried to get my Gram to teach me to knit over Christmas when she was here. It didn't go so well. Maybe I'll have to check out youtube.

Tell me, do you have two regular needles, or did you get the "circular" ones. My gram said circular are easier, but I'm not convinced.

How have I not heard this song? I love it already.

What I don't love is my lack of craftiness. I'm all thumbs. I wish it just weren't so. Sigh. I'll just admire your cool handiwork.

I want to learn how!!! My grandmother taught me when I was 10 or 11 and my mom tried to convince me that you don't forget how. Evidently I forgot because it's all greek to me. I could probably benefit from those YouTube videos.

Love your scarf! You're so crafty.
