A Hairy Tale

My lower left leg looks like a mangy dog.

I guess I should start at the beginning.

It all started almost a year ago when I searched high and low for a plain razor. A no-muss, no-fuss, no extra-moisturizing strip. A plain ole' razor.

After finding myself looking through every department and drug store within a 2500 mile radius, I've come to the conclusion that they just don't make them anymore.

Ok, maybe that last statement was a bit of an exaggeration. The exact mileage from my front door in Arizona to the front door to where I live now is only 2105.57 miles. And they do, in fact, make razors that don't have a strip. It's just that those razor's are always a generic brand, and they will cut you up like a wood chipper on a good day.

Oh, and if you leave them in the shower for half a second, they rust.

I'm not even kidding.

You can imagine I was getting tired of shredding my legs to bits with rusty razors, so I bit the bullet and bought those expensive ones with the lubricating strip. Which I personally feel is a gimmick, but what could I do? The people at Gillette had me by the legs.

I don't like that sneaky, slick strip for one reason alone: I swear they dull the blade quicker, ensuring that I will go through them twice as fast, forcing me to buy more!  I know what you're thinking. Your thinking that my corse, crazy-growing hair could be the part of the problem, but I am telling you, it's just not so.

I could cry defeat, wave my white flag, and turn my eyes from a scheme, but its the principle, you know? You have to know what to fight for.

About three weeks ago I decided to take a bold stand... if you saw my legs right now, you would know how bold.

As some of you know our home in AZ has yet to sell.  As a result I have resorted to waxing my own eyebrows. My sister-in-law, and AZ hair guru, told me what to buy and it's been working like a charm.

There were a few times I wasn't sure I would walk out of the bathroom with all my eyelashes, but for the most part, my gig working with wax has been successful, and has saved me a monthly expense.

I got to thinking... if I could wax my own eyebrows, how hard could it be to wax my own legs?

Famous last thoughts.

Let's just say its not exactly easy. Which is why my left lower leg now looks like a sorry dog with the mange.

Oh, and my fingers keep sticking to the keyboard. Honee Wax is sticky stuff.

So here is my dilemma, do I just call it quits, and go grab a lubed up razor? Or should I go see a professional and ask for a discount since she'll only have to do one-and-a-half-legs?

You are a brave woman! I don't ever think I could wax my own eyebrows.

I myself am a fan of the lubricating strip so I'm afraid I'm not much help to you my friend.

lol ooo I did this same thing in College.. except when I ripped the strip off no hair came off :-P So then I had really long leg hair... i think I used 4 razors to shave after that :-P

Oh my goodness that was a funny post. Can you just peel (or scrape) the strip off of the nicer razors? I personally am with Kelly and don't have a thing against the strip myself. Hope the mange gets better soon!!!

Oh that's funny...well, sorta ;)

I TOTALLY NEED A TUTORIAL on the brow waxing and I am SOOO serious!!!

I don't mind the "strip" but you are right that they dull quickly. I would probably just shave them and be done. But, now is the time, as hard as you've worked to have "waxable" legs to take the plunge and get it professionally...

Sorry, I no help with a definitive answer, am I???

Okay. Tutorial. Please.

Getting waxed at the salon is a treat for me. I'm too cheap to pay for waxing on a regular basis. I use that same GiGi honey stuff at home in true DIY fashion. But how cool is it that I've used it forever without any direction from the hair guru?! I feel so validated now. Clearly it doesn't take much.

This post reminds me of the story you told about how when you get your legs waxed you need to have a good four to six weeks of growth. I dare you to post a picture. Double dog dare you even.

Oh you are a brave woman!

I vote for buying a cheap razor. I like the Venus disposable kind, but you know what I really like even better? The men's razors. I think it's the Mach 3 that I've been using.

Good luck, girl.

This is so funny!! I say go buy the razors. The waxing will be more expensive. Good luck. Can't wait to hear what you decided.

I'm with you. I hate.hate.hate the strip!! Good luck with the other leg...whatever you decide. :)

Oh, I don't even want to read any further if you decide to do home bikini waxing. LOL! I'm cringing as it is!!! I just had my eyebrows done (a luxury, but it had been like, years), and am considering doing my bikini line so I don't scare the young keikis in Hawaii. But...I think I'll just wear a swimsuit cover up. Yep. Problem solved.

Loved how you wrote about them "having you by the legs" . :)

My BFF and I used to wax each other's lip/eyebrows in college. Then we got to a certain age and decided some things are worth the price and best left to the pros. Waxing is one of those things.

She bought herself a new style epilady after I blogged about it recently. I tried it out...still hurts like hell, but the results are amazing!

You are brave! I would never trust myself to wax my own eyebrows. I've thought about it, but I'm sure I would screw that up royally!

I use the razors with the lubricating strips -- but I usually get them for "free" with CVS extra care bucks. If you cut coupons for the razors, CVS pretty much pays you to buy them (you actually end up "making money"). So, I don't feel so bad about using them.

Oh...I would be tempted to try for the discount on the one-and-a-half legs. :) I've never actually gotten my legs waxed professionally before, but I've always wanted to.

I've never thought about the lubricating strips dulling the blades more quickly, but I'll take your word for it! :)

I love it! I wax myself all the time if I didn't it would cost me a $$$. For those of us with dark hair we have to take action! Hope everything goes well with no burns!
