The Morning Moofish Saved My Life

"It's not what you know. It's who you know."

Have you ever heard that saying before?

Well, here at La Vida Dulce, I like to say: "You'll only go as far as your enablers."

And that my friends, is the truth.

Several times on this blog I have written about Generic Products. In the thirteen years that I have been a homemaker I have learned that there are products I won't buy, no matter how cheap it comes.

Yet, I am still but a young grasshopper.

Last month, in an effort to show my willingness to sacrifice in hard economic times, I bought Kirkland brand coffee at Costco.

I don't know about you, but I buy my coffee in bulk, because around here coffee is about as important as toilet paper. No, I guess I should be honest, I would NEVER forget to buy coffee, because i believe in a little something called "priorities".

Any-way, to save us a whopping $1.02 (ish) I decided to get the Kirkland bucket of coffee, over my Folgers brand @ $12.35.

Imagine how pleasantly surprised I was when the Kirkland coffee was actually better!

But, alas, it soon ran dry.

Since I am in the process of what the military handbook refers to as "eating down", I'm doing my best to consume most of what is in my pantry, and buying in bulk defeats that purpose.

That is why, last week when I was in the Target, I decided that the Target brand coffee would be just as good. Cuz all generics are created equal right?

Of course I had forgotten that all generics are NOT created equal.

This is the problem of being an optimist, you tend to forget the things that really need to be remembered.

Y'all. Really. Do NOT buy the Target coffee if you are a lover of coffee. It is awful.

In my humble opinion, of course.

Why am I telling you this? (Other than this is my party blog and I'll whine if I want to?)

This is why: this morning when I went for a walk with Mrs Moofish, we were actually at a loss for words.

This NEVER happens. Well, sometimes it happens with her, because she doesn't actually talk as much as me. Oh, and also, she doesn't drink coffee (go figure?). But, she can usually hold her own when we're together.

I told her that the root of my non-talking problem was that I'd only been able to drink half the amount of coffee than usual.

I told her my sad tale of generic coffee woe.

And do you know what she did?

She fixed it. Because she is a fabulous friend, and enabler.

She was going to Costco after our walk, however she had been over ambitious on her last Costco trip and actually had a bucket of Folgers just sitting in her pantry, unopened, and available for adoption (or stealing. )

She gave it to me, and then I walked across a very busy street carrying 3.5 pounds of deliciousness. I felt so proud. Like I was bringing home 360 cups of gold.

My only complaint was that I didn't have a picture to post for this entry.

Take some really bad advice from an addict aficionado like me:
You'll only go as far as your enablers...I am proof that you can get pretty far!

You are SOOOO funny. I am so there with you with the coffee thing. For a long time my tastebuds would not allow me to taste the difference b/t brands of coffee, but they have since starting wising up. I call coffee my "happy juice," and I just am not the same person without it - sad isn't it? I am so glad Mrs. Moofish saved the day!!!!

You know, some of the Kirland brand is even roasted by Starbucks (if you're Starbucks fan . . .) and some they roast in-store.

Thank goodness for that Mrs Moofish. What would we do if she hadn't intervened? Might we not have had a post until you moved??

I have never liked coffee, but I understand your need for name brands over generic sometimes. My husband won't eat anything but "real" Cheerios (even if they are $4 for a tiny box) We eat alot of cheerios around here so buying those in bulk is a must. Once I bought store brand peanut butter and couldn't even spread it cuz it was so hard. Yuck!

What can I say? Even though I can't drink coffee, I am married to an addic- um, aficianado. Must
Not Run Out! Besides, it behooves me to keep my dear friend (and my spouse, for that matter!) happy! Enjoy!

Oh, that's too funny. After being hopelessly addicted to coffee, I stopped drinking it when I was pregnant and havnen't gone back. But when I get a whiff of it, oh, it makes me want a cup so badly. I'll take your advice and stay far away from the Targe brand. :)

I feel almost blessed that I don't drink coffee. That stuff is EXPEN$IVE...I buy instant at Aldi for my bread making (my recipe for Outback Bread requires it, otherwise I would never buy it.) I broke my husband of his coffee habit during Year 1 of our time together. I've probably saved THOUSANDS of dollars...

I know "eating down" all too well.

Your comments made me laugh! I am sure that when you get back to NC, you will be met with lots of welcome baskets to make unpacking and settling in easier.

I had a friend in Kentucky to tasted another friend's famous derby pie at a church potluck and exclaimed, "This is worth having a baby for!" So when she had a child a couple of years later, she got a beautiful baby girl and a fresh derby pie!

Glad you got your coffee fix!

Target brand is ok for things like medicine, but around here, we only buy good coffee. That's the only vice I have (and I have to say, right now with a baby, I can't even really drink coffee so I'm really cranky a lot, ha ha).

Such a great post -- glad to see someone else values coffee as much as me!

So funny and so TRUE! Some things are worth the extra $1.02. Thanks for the heads up re: Target coffee...good to know. Coffee is an important addiction in our house. ;)

This story was funny the first time I heard it and still funny in written form. I wish I would have been driving down that busy road at the time. I totally would have had to pull my trusty sony cyber-shot from my purse to have captured the picture for your blog.

What a friend you have to come to your rescue with coffee!

That is so great that you find an enabler for your "habit"! Seriously, that was really nice of her.
