February Random Poll: Generics

Hello!

I am so glad to be typing at you after 5 days with a respiratory flu! How awesome it is to feel better after being sick!

Unfortunately, not everyone here is healthy yet. The Girl is still running fever, but for the moment she is content.

I haven't done a random poll in a several months now. This month's poll will focus on Generic products.

Almost 9 months ago we bought this house and had to stock it with all the necessities. Things like cleaning products, toilet paper and chocolate.

On that fateful shopping trip I made the bad decision to go with generic toilet paper and I have regretted it ever since. Unfortunately, not only was it cheap, but it was very rough, very thin, and there seemed to be an unending supply of it.

I ended up buying better toilet paper and just putting the generic TP in the bathrooms every once in awhile. I figured that if everyone was getting the generic TP every other roll, they would only complain half as much.

As I type, the last roll is in my bathroom. I can't tell you how many times I have wished I had a toddler in my house right now who might go into the bathroom and destroy that roll of paper. It's like the never-ending roll.

You know, life is short, I've decided paying for decent toilet paper is something I can live with.

So what about you? Do you buy generic products? Which items have you learned are better paying a premium for?

Once I graduated college, I decided there were a few things I was NOT going to scrimp on...TP being one of them (only charmin ultra soft for me). Viva paper towels are another. I'll buy generic items for most canned goods (except soup that I'm actually going to eat and not cook with), plastic baggies and wraps, not so much on the cleaning products though.

Most products I will try the generic product at least once and most things I don't notice too much difference. HOWEVER... I, too, learned the toilet paper lesson and have three brands which I buy, depending on which one is a little cheaper--that's as far as I go in scrimping in that area. There are also a few other products where I tried the generic and now will only buy the brand. It's kind of random though, so I don't have a system that I can pin down. I just know what I like!! So, I figure, I use generic in the things that I can live with and that makes enough savings to buy the things that have no substitute! How's that for justification! =)

Generic toilet paper is non-existent as far as I'm concerned. It is way too harsh to get my stamp of approval. I do buy Target brand fabric softener sheets and ziplock bags, but that's about it. And I'm not sure those truly count as "generic" per se. I grew up thinking that it was generic only if it had a white label and black lettering. But maybe that dates me.

.... better late than never for me... I am learning even the 'better' generic tp (Safeway) is okay in comfort, but the roll goes way fast. I haven't really decided on which tp brand I prefer.

I do buy a lot of generic stuff -- but only Safeway's -- Kroger (Fry's) and whatever Albertson's carries just doesn't do it for me.

I too refuse to buy generic diet coke -- other flavors are fine, but anything other than 'the real (fake) thing' ... no way.

sorry you're all feeling so crappy.

I ate cheetos today too -- yummmy.
